Gotland fleece is fine, long, lustrous and dense. It can be varying shades of grey, from pale silver to a rich blue-gray to a dark charcoal or almost black. The fleece is typically 29-34 microns.
Babydoll fleece is springy and soft. About 2 to 3 inches long, it is relatively short. It runs in the 19 to 22 micron range, which means it’s very similar to cashmere and can be worn next to the skin without being itchy and uncomfortable.
colored bluefaced leicester
Bluefaced Leicester is a longwool breed with a staple length of 3-6 inches, and 24-28 microns. It creates high-quality semi-luster yarns with soft hand, beautiful drape, and excellent dyeing properties.
Modern fine wool sheep will grow wool continuously, so it is important to shear them at least once sometimes twice per year depending on their breed genetics. Shearing is usually done in the spring, as to help the sheep regulate their body temperature and prevent overheating in the hot summer months. Sheep can also be shorn prior to winter however they will require good nutrition and shelter from the cold weather.
Shearing is a specialized skill and physically demanding. Shearing requires skill so that sheep are shorn properly without cuts or injuries to the sheep and shearer. Always hire a good professional shearer to shear sheep.
Wool fibers are renewable, durable and breathable.
